About us

During the winter months we have had nice hiking weeks and many guests who came wintering. Everybody enjoyed all the Alentejo offers in wintertime. Of course a lot of jobs were done, like the yearly pruning of the grapevines, olive trees and cork oaks. We made verandas in various places, handy against the sun as well as rain.

The terraces of Amarela, Mimosa and Azul have been renovated with beautiful natural stones. In the meantime the vegetable garden has been started up, the hammocks are placed between the trees and the salt-water pool is in use again. We are ready for the summer!

Our regular guests already know them: our dog Tara and our cat Pudi. Tara loves walking and luckily she is very popular, so guests often take her with them for a walk. Pudi shows up now and then and likes to be cuddled. Our animals also think it is paradise here!

Activity week: painting

For over 13 years we have been organizing painting weeks in spring as well as autumn. Both the participants and teacher enjoy these courses. The landscape with its sheds, wells, flowers, plants, trees and views is very inspiring and the environment is nice and quiet.

The 8-days painting course offers a good combination of being creative and enjoying a relaxing holiday. Besides drawing and painting there is enough time and space to enjoy the estate, the silence, swimming, excursions, cycling, hiking, reading a good book, resting in a hammock… It is all possible.

To join a painting week at Maravilhas you do not need to be experienced in drawing or painting. Art teacher and artist Rupa Bokhorst teaches individually. Her aim is not the result, but for you to come into contact with your inner creativity. The painting week includes accommodation and vegetarian meals. You can be accommodated in a single or double room in one of our houses. If you prefer to camp, it is possible on our small camping, where we have excellent facilities and spacious spots for your tent or caravan.

At Maravilhas we take a lot of care regarding the meals. You can enjoy a delicious breakfast and lunch. In the evening we all come together to enjoy a vegetarian dinner, which is prepared with a lot of fresh ingredients and a lot of love. Interested? The next painting week will take place from 4 – 11 October 2014.

Guests about Monte Maravilhas

Of course we are very enthusiastic about the beautiful Alentejo, where Monte Maravilhas is located. Fortunately our guests share this opinion. Below they like to share their experiences at Monte Maravilhas with us.

Ingrid and Peter in Casa Mimosa:

“The air smells here like Mediterranean and holidays! The flower abundance, the sheep cattle, the archways of the cistus roses, the smell of the eucalyptus and lavender, the hiking routes, the ‘lonely’ shepherd , the beautiful views, the storks, the ‘deafening’ silence, the folklore of the Festas de Maio in Amoreiras-Gare, the delicious breakfast on our private terrace of Casa Mimosa. We received a great Portuguese present! Thank you for so much hospitality!”

Gwen and Rob in Casa Azul:

“What a nice place to be! The silence, the peace, the warmth, the cooler nights, the pool, the hammock and our house Casa Azul. I found this place via Google and reading the website gave me a good feeling. Two wonderful weeks have confirmed this feeling and maybe even exceeded it.

We made beautiful walks in the sizzling heat; enjoyed the beach and the beautiful spots at the west coast, the high waves are a delight to play in. We cooked a lot ourselves and enjoyed a few times the meals of Saskia, great so close by. Thank you for this beautiful place and also thank you for the very good massage! Until next time.”

Friends of Maravilhas: Yoka’s B&B in Lagos

Yoka is a welcome guest at Maravilhas and a close friend of Prem. She has been living in Portugal since 1984 and has a small Bed & Breakfast in the historical town Lagos. The top floor of her house has been arranged for this with a bedroom, bathroom and roof terrace, where it is a joy to be.

The B&B is situated in the center of Lagos in the Algarve, and is very quiet. Yoka is a fine hostess and she can give you good tips about shops, restaurants and places to go out in Lagos.

A stay at Maravilhas can be easily combined with a stay in the lively town of Lagos, with beaches at walking distance. Combining the Alentejo and Algarve makes a very varied holiday in southern Portugal. For information and reservations you can phone Yoka: +351 915 242 890.

Happy at Monte Sahaja

Our neighbours of Monte Sahaja made a cheerful video on the song ‘Happy’. You can watch the video on Youtube. We find it very contagious and become happy about it ourselves. Hopefully this counts for everybody who is watching it!
