At Maravilhas

After a beautiful but dry winter in the Alentejo, it started to rain in April. Spring has begun and the lavender and other flowers are fully blooming. We are busy in the vegetable garden and planting flowers on the terraces.

The former generator building next to the water tank was rebuilt into “Casa Joana” during the winter. This studio house has a kitchen, bathroom, spacious living room/bedroom with wooden floors and sliding doors to the terrace. Located on the top of a hill, the view is magnificent.

On the other hilltop we have started digging, putting in pipes, and leveling the road in preparation for a new small camping building, with shower and toilet facilities. There will also be several electricity and water connections. All these facilities are meant to offer camping guests with caravans and tents more comfort on the hill.

Prem was at the Hiking and Cycling Fair in Amsterdam last February. In the photograph alongside, she is with Piet, one of our hiking guides. It was very nice to have met people she knew there, including former guests, friends, and colleagues. Indeed, she is always eager to meet new people there too, and welcome new guests to Maravilhas.

Activity weeks

After a full hiking week in February last, we have just finished yet another Portuguese language and culture week this April. Further on in the newsletter you can find the reports of the participants. They agreed that one of the best things about this week is that what you learn in the morning time, you can practice later on during the small excursions in the afternoon. We are pleased that this concept is being appreciated so much.

We will also organise activity weeks in June:
the massage & meditation course
the hiking course
and yoga course.
In September there will be a painting course and a hiking course.

Events in Alentejo

Recent festivals:

  • 25 April: Parties with fireworks to celebrate the day of the revolution
  • 28-30 April: Spring festival in Amoreiras-Gare with decorated streets, music, food and a market
  • 9-11 May: Big annual market in Garvão

In spring as well as summer we still have some vacancies in the holiday houses of Maravilhas. Courtesy of our new availability calendars for Casa Amarela, Mimosa and Azul, you can now see when they are free online at any time. For camping lovers, there are still caravans for rent and camping spaces available too.

Guests of Maravilhas

We can assure everybody that they will enjoy themselves here at Monte Maravilhas but we believe that it is always better to hear directly from guests that they have a good time here. Below we have some reviews from the participants of the Portuguese language and culture course in the beginning of April:

“In a beautiful environment  and  fine accommodation we learned the principles of the Portuguese language. The theory lessons in the morning were alternated by “culture” excursions in the afternoon.  We visited Portuguese neighbours, villages, shops and café’s and picked oranges. In this way we could practice what we had learned in theory.

In between the lessons we were taken care of in an excellent way with great meals in a pleasant atmosphere. Overall we had a very good start at learning the language and with the tips of Sabina (our teacher) and by practicing what we learned, we will be able to make the language our own eventually. Thank you for taking care of us. Muito obrigado!”
André en Zwannie

“My arrival in the Alentejo was surprisingly warm. After a pleasant train journey from Faro to Funcheira I was full heartedly received by Prem and John. We went by car through beautiful scenery with hills, views, colourful flowers and plants, white houses, old sheds and mills to Maravilhas. When I arrived, I met the other participants André and Zwannie and our teacher Sabina.

It was particularly great for me that the group was small. We were able to exchange a lot as regards language and culture and there was plenty opportunity for some extra help, which I needed sometimes. We made nice cultural trips to practice what we had learned in the lessons, but oh, it was difficult! I was very nervous at first at speaking Portuguese but luckily there was always support at hand.

The course is well set up and therefore a good base for beginners. That said, there would also have been good opportunity for advanced learners to improve their knowledge. I intend to continue to improve my knowledge when I get back home. It was exactly what I had hoped this course would be. The audio CD of the course was a good supplement and it is on my laptop now!

It was great to meet Prem and Tara (sweet dog) as well as John and Joanne. We had interesting and inspiring conversations and we shared good laughs too. In my bedroom with a comfortable bed I felt completely at home. I loved the great meals that John presented to us every day! Joanne is a sweetheart and Prem – thank you for your warmth and love and care!

Thank you for everything, what a joy it was to be at Maravilhas! I will not forget you because I have beautiful photos and great memories.”

Friends of Maravilhas

Volunteers are essential at Maravilhas. We are thankful for all their help and support. During the past few months we had help from different countries: Pedro from Portugal, Eric from Estonia and Jaap from Holland. Joanne from Ireland will be helping us over the coming months. The following is a review of her experiences at Maravilhas to date.

“I arrived at Monte Maravilhas on 27 March of this year, a little unsure of what to expect. I was still wearing my heavy black raincoat from Ireland when I arrived at Funcheira station, although the sun was blazing at the time. I was greeted at the station by Deva, a friend of Prem’s and we began our journey to Monte Maravilhas. This was my first time in Portugal. I was immediately struck by the beauty of the area, in particular by the various types of trees. I had never before seen orange trees bearing fruit, or Cork trees after the peeling of their trunks had taken place and a number placed on them, or fig trees beginning to blossom.

Upon arrival at Monte Maravilhas, Prem, Tara the dog and Pudi the cat were all present to say hello. I was firstly shown to my new temporary accommodation at Casa Mula. We chatted for some time and I was then given a tour of Monte Maravilhas. I was given a day and a half to relax, explore and find my way around in the locality. It was very pleasant to have received such a warm welcome into the Monte Maravilhas family.

Since my arrival in Monte Maravilhas, I have helped with the cleaning of the houses, the preparation of meals, gardening and walking Tara the dog, which is more of a pastime I must admit! I have had a lot of time to relax and chat with both neighbours and guests here at Monte Maravilhas. Indeed I have made some really good friends here too in such a short space of time. I cannot compliment John enough for the fantastic vegetarian meals he has made us over the past few weeks.

On 10 April last, I celebrated my birthday here in style.  I had ‘happy birthday’ sung to me in both Portuguese and Dutch. We went to Villa Nova de Milfontes beach during the daytime, which was one of my best presents for the day and we all had birthday cake later on that evening. It was a special birthday to remember!

It was always my intention to make use of my career break from work in order to experience different ways of life and I believe that thanks to Prem I have successfully achieved this here in Portugal. In Ireland I work in a busy office environment in a city centre location, where I work in front of a computer every day and the sun is a rare spectacle in the sky. Here in Portugal I help out in a relaxed environment in a rural setting, where the daily duties are more of a physical varied nature and the sun shines on a regular basis. It has been a pleasure helping out at Monte Maravilhas to date.

I consider however, that it really is the people here who have made the experience so pleasant so far, notwithstanding the beauty and tranquillity of Monte Maravilhas. Prem has been an excellent host. I really appreciated the time and effort invested in making my birthday so special this year and I look forward to the times ahead at Monte Maravilhas!”
Joanne

So this is it for now as regards all the goings on at Maravilhas. It leaves us to wish everybody a very pleasant spring until the next newsletter!
